  • A curious and adventurous spirit
  • An open mind and heart
  • The drive to succeed
  • The desire to grow through new experiences
  • A passion for giving through service
  • The desire to learn about other cultures and people

How do Student Ambassador programs prepare me for the next level of education?

All Student Ambassador programs provide a unique opportunity for educational growth, which can help give you an edge in the classroom. In addition, academic credit and service-learning hours are available (depending on the program and age requirements).

High school students: Your involvement as a Student Ambassador can provide you with a competitive edge on your college and scholarship applications. Student Ambassador alumni have found that their experiences with People to People Ambassador Programs helped them answer many interview questions and, in some cases, provided the theme for admissions and scholarship essays.

Junior high/middle school students: Starting off on the right foot in high school is critical to your success. Your experience as a Student Ambassador will prepare you to be more confident, responsible, and assertive. The alumni students and parents you meet at the information meetings will share how their participation in a People to People Student Ambassador program prepared them for the years to follow.

Elementary school: For many students, the transition from grade school to junior high or middle school can be a challenging time. By participating in a People to People Student Ambassador program, students will gain valuable skills to help them succeed in the transition, including social interaction and time-management skills, self-confidence, respect for others, and how to make smart choices.

Do I need to be nominated to become a Student Ambassador?

No, you do not need to be nominated to become a Student Ambassador.

How do I become a Student Ambassador?

In order to become a Student Ambassador, you must apply. All students who apply must do the following:

  1. Pass a required interview with their program leader.
  2. Submit 3 letters of recommendation (nominated students need only 2).

What sets a People to People Ambassador Program journey apart from other student travel programs?

People to People Ambassador Programs has a clear mission: to provide students with unparalleled access to people and places beyond compare, preparing them for success in a globalized world by making friends locally and globally. Student Ambassador programs visit schools, experience homestays, absorb world culture through firsthand exploration, meet with government experts, and enjoy unique insider access to significant people and places. Student Ambassadors prepare for this experience well in advance and are asked to keep a daily journal and participate fully in all activities for academic credit. Students build their leadership skills while working as a team with other students and making friends in a well-supervised environment of cultural exploration. Comparing cultures and ways of life helps students gain global awareness—the very mission of People to People Ambassador Programs.

What is an Orientation Meeting and how does it prepare you for travel?

All Student Ambassador programs start long before you board the plane. After you complete the selection process, orientation meetings will prepare you for what you'll see and do throughout travel. Orientation Meetings can be offered both in-person and online and are the perfect opportunity for leaders to educate their students on:

  • the country or countries they will visit,
  • the activities they will take part in,
  • and the expectations for how to travel safely and successfully.

During this time, the students will also complete specific assignments designed to increase the learning opportunities. The Student Ambassador program experience begins months before a student ever gets on a plane. This is an educational journey that begins the moment you apply.

What does a People to People Student Ambassador program look like?

What unique life experiences are available to Student Ambassadors?

Every Student Ambassador program is carefully designed with our students and our mission in mind. Student Ambassadors often have school visits or one-on-one experiences with local families overseas. Our extensive travel experience allows students behind-the-scenes access in many of the countries we visit, and the wide variety of cultural interactions opens an entirely new world for our Ambassadors. Many of our students return with a new perspective on the world and their role as a global citizen.

How can I make a difference in the world through People to People Ambassador Programs?

Our Student Ambassadors see the world differently. They see people and places on television or in a textbook and can say they have been there. But more importantly, they value understanding other people and other cultures. Often, this global perspective creates interest in new career paths or identifies new subjects for study in school. Additionally, by representing their family and their country to others, Student Ambassadors recognize the power an individual has to effect positive change.

In what types of service projects do Student Ambassadors take part?

To date, Student Ambassadors have clocked more than 100,000 service hours for communities around the world. Some of our international projects include:

  • Reforestation efforts in Malta
  • Visiting children at an SOS Children's Village in Italy
  • Environmental projects from Europe to the South Pacific
  • Tsunami-relief efforts in Japan

How many academic credits do Student Ambassadors earn?

In addition, students in grades 7–8 may enroll for one credit and students in grades 9–12 for up to 12 credits through Eastern Washington University.
